About 20% of children and 1-2 % of adults suffer with this disease.

Eczema is not transmittable, but since it is believed to be at least partially inherited, it is not unusual to find members of the same family affected.

CAUSES:



The cause of the eczema is not exactly known by the doctors. It is shown by the studies that it is due to the gene defects that lead to the abnormality in the proteins such as filaggrin that are essential in maintain the barrier of normal skin.

When some substances like soaps, cosmetics, clothing, detergents, jewelry, or sweat come in contact with the skin then it become the cause of triggering various forms of eczema. Environmental allergens, humidity, psychological stress and changes in temperature may also cause outbreaks of eczema.

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS:

Skin gets dry and reddened cause itches or burns due to eczema. Although the appearance of eczema differs from person to person on the basis of eczema’s type. Intense itching is normally the first symptom in most people suffering with eczema. Sometimes, eczema may lead to blisters and oozing lesions, but it may also result in dry and scaly skin. Frequent scratching may lead to thickened, crusty skin.

In children and adults, eczema usually occurs on the face, neck, and the insides of the elbows, knees, and ankles. While in general any part of the body can be affected by eczema. In infants, eczema normally occurs on the forehead, neck, forearms, legs, scalp, and cheeks.

Eczema can sometimes occur as a short-lived reaction that only leads to symptoms for a few hours or days, but in other cases, the symptoms persevere over a longer time and are referred to as chronic dermatitis.

TYPES:



Atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis is consider as a chronic skin disease characterized by itchy and inflamed skin. Environmental factors like molds, pollen, or pollutants; contact irritants are the major factors that may cause atopic dermatitis.



Contact eczema

Contact eczema includes redness, itching, and burning in areas where the skin has come into contact with an allergen or with a general irritant such as an acid or other chemical. It occurs mostly in people who have a history of allergies.

Seborrheic eczema

Seborrheic eczema is a skin irritation of unknown cause. The major symptoms of this disease are yellowish, oily, scaly patches of skin on the scalp, face, and rarely other parts of the body.

Nummular eczema

Nummular eczema is characterized by coin-shaped patches of irritated skin. These patches most commonly appear on the arms, back, buttocks, and lowerlegs. It is relatively unusual and occurs most commonly in elderly men.

Neuro dermatitis

Neuro dermatitis is skin inflammation caused by a scratch-itch cycle that begins with a localized itch (such as an insect bite).It is common in women then men and the condition is most frequent in people 20-50 years of age.

Stasis dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis is a skin inflammation due to circulatory problem known as venous insufficiency. Stasis dermatitis occurs almost totally in middle-aged and elderly people. Signs include itching and/or reddish-brown discoloration of the skin on one or both legs.

Dyshidrotic eczema

Dyshidrotic eczema (dyshidrotic dermatitis) is an irritation of the skin on the palms of hands and soles of the feet with unknown cause. Males and females are equally affected.
